Pitch Control
Render a physics-based heatmap showing which team controls each zone of the pitch.
The Pitch Control lens overlays a heatmap on the pitch surface where each cell is coloured by the team that would reach it first, based on player positions and movement vectors. The model uses a Spearman-inspired physics approach: each player's control radius expands from their current position at a rate based on realistic sprint acceleration.
Activating the lens
- Open the Lenses panel in the sidebar.
- Click the Pitch Control tile.
- The heatmap renders immediately. Home-team zones appear in blue; away-team zones appear in red. Contested zones appear as a neutral colour.
Options
- Team filter — highlight only home or only away controlled zones.
- Opacity — reduce opacity to view the heatmap alongside other lenses.
- Resolution — switch between fast (coarse grid) and detailed (fine grid) rendering.
Reading the output
Large areas of one colour mean the controlling team would win the ball in those zones — a strong indicator of pressing dominance or dangerous space behind the defensive line. A contested middle strip shows two balanced teams. Pause playback on a critical moment to get a static snapshot for presentation.
